5 Therapeutic Yoga Poses That Support Thyroid Health
The thyroid gland โ a small butterfly-shaped organ in your neck โ controls metabolism, energy, mood, temperature regulation and much more. When it underperforms (hypothyroidism) or overperforms (hyperthyroidism), the effects ripple through your entire body. While medication is essential in many cases, therapeutic yoga can meaningfully support thyroid function as a complementary intervention. Here are five poses our yoga therapists recommend most. ## 1. Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) Often called the "queen of all asanas," shoulder stand inverts blood flow to the thyroid, provides a gentle compression-release mechanism and is thought to stimulate glandular activity. Hold for 30โ60 seconds, building to 3โ5 minutes over weeks. Contraindication: Avoid if you have cervical spondylosis or uncontrolled hypertension. ## 2. Matsyasana (Fish Pose) The counter-pose to shoulder stand, fish pose stretches the anterior neck, opens the throat chakra and increases circulation to the thyroid region. Hold for 30 seconds with deep, slow breathing. ## 3. Halasana (Plow Pose) Plow pose works similarly to shoulder stand but with greater spinal stretch. It stimulates the thyroid through neck flexion and improves overall endocrine function. Hold for 1โ2 minutes. ## 4. Ustrasana (Camel Pose) A deep backbend that stretches the entire anterior body including the throat and neck. Camel pose stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands through extension. Practice with support initially. ## 5. Ujjayi Pranayama (Victorious Breath) This breathing technique creates a gentle internal heat and vibration in the throat that directly massages the thyroid gland. Practice 5โ10 minutes daily. It also calms the nervous system, reducing cortisol that suppresses thyroid function. ## Practice Guidelines Practice these poses 4โ5 times per week, ideally in the morning before eating. Combine with a selenium-rich diet (Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, mushrooms) and regular thyroid monitoring every 3 months. Our HealthyWise team offers dedicated thyroid reversal programs that combine nutrition, yoga and Ayurvedic support.
